The UCSB Greenhouse and Garden Project (GHGP) is a plot based community garden open to UCSB students, staff, and faculty. Members are able to grow their own food and practice gardening amongst a community of folks with a shared passion.
The Edible Campus Program is currently fundraising to replace the Greenhouse with a structure that will honor the original student intent for the space and design, but will update the Greenhouse to meet current safety standards.
Support for GHGP will not only provide for future generations of the campus community, but it will also honor the long history of the Project. While It has been in its current location between Harder Stadium and Los Carneros Road since the late 1970s/early 1980s, GHGP is much olderand was first located where the UCSB Thunderdome is today.
The Greenhouse itself was built by students in the early 1980s with mostly reclaimed materials and designed to support passive solar heating. It is a functional space where the campus community grow plants from seed, but is also used by undergraduate researchers, courses, and co-curricular workshops. The outdoor education space is particularly helpful for educational programming. Below you can see a picture of Professor Bridget Lewin teaching a class in the outdoor education space attached to the Greenhouse.
Over time the building has suffered significant damage, including termite damage (pictured here) and will need to be rebuilt in order for it to continue being a resource for students and the community. Still early in planning, our goal is to raise $850,000 to replace this original greenhouse while honoring its design and history. We welcome community involvement in our fundraising effort.
