The Community Host Partners are the many non-profit organizations, K-12 schools, public universities, and government agencies that host College Corps fellows for UCSB.  We are very grateful for their mentorship and support of our students. UCSB's College Corps has 35 Partners which you can read about below.

If your organization would like to learn about how to apply to be a community host partner, please reach out to Sergio Lagunas lagunas@ucsb.edu. At this point, we don't have capacity in the near future to expand community host partners, however it is still good to reach out so that we can notify you when those opportunities arise in the future.

Apples to Zucchini Cooking School was founded out of a simple but powerful idea: to bring people together through cooking—and to give children, teens, and adults the skills, confidence, and joy of preparing real food. We have two different projects that we would like fellows to work on:

Develop curriculum for our Tater Tots program. Our Tater Tots program introduces toddlers and their caregivers to food exploration in a fun, curious, and non-judgmental environment. Through play, hands-on activities, and guided discovery using the five senses, children build positive early relationships with food while caregivers learn practical strategies to support healthy eating behaviors at home. The fellow would help design and refine a cohesive, developmentally appropriate curriculum that aligns with our mission and can be implemented consistently across sessions.

Create and administer surveys for our various types of classes.  The fellow would review, interpret, and adapt an existing survey tool used by other programs for practical implementation within Apples to Zucchini’s programs.

Campus Canopy is a program to green school campuses across Santa Barbara. Inspired by a shared belief in the power of nature to shape how children learn and grow, the founders combined their expertise in landscape architecture, education, and nonprofit leadership to create joyful, collaborative planting days that build community and climate resilience from the ground up. The fellows will primarily work outdoors on school campuses, supporting both the development and care of our existing landscapes and the creation of new regenerative landscape areas. Their work will include hands-on activities such as seeding, planting native species, weeding, mulching, installing swales, staking trees and learning the full process of establishing native landscapes that build healthy soil and reclaim water. There will also be opportunities for landscape mapping and design. This role offers practical, applied training in regenerative landscaping while school is in session, providing regular opportunities to engage with K-12 students who visit and interact with the sites. In addition to land stewardship, fellows will contribute to building simple infrastructure—such as fences and signage—and help communicate the purpose and progress of our projects to the broader school community.

Compost will be harvested when ready in order to feed the school garden.  Other components that we are looking to have the Fellow help us with is improving our data collection and helping us finish up our composting curriculum that our Garden Educators use. There will be school Science/STEM Nights where we will be looking to have the Fellow help us with tabling and sharing the Compost Clubs achievements as well as Composting Workshops that can be offered to the different school’s communities.

The goal of the outreach will be to let residents know about the new charging stations being installed, how to access the chargers, and also how to access financial support to purchase electric vehicles. Fellows in this program may also help to outreach to property owners to line up new locations for charging stations in the future. The fellow will be serving a diverse group of elementary school students, the majority of whom come from Old Town Goleta (bussed in from across the freeway) Latinx backgrounds, with nearly half identified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. Through this fellowship, the fellow will provide targeted academic support, mentorship, and encouragement to help bridge these gaps. By working closely with students in small groups or one-on-one settings, the fellow can help the classroom teacher tailor support to individual learning needs, reinforce foundational skills, and help students build confidence in their abilities. Additionally, the fellow’s presence as a relatable and supportive mentor can positively influence students’ attitudes toward education and future aspirations. The fellow will work with small groups of students (1-6 students) in a differentiated station set up by the classroom teacher. Topics will mostly be phonics, reading, and writing skills. UCSB
Climate Action & Food Security

The College Corps fellows will manage volunteer events, workshops, and planting activities at St. Michael’s Community Garden.  One of the College Corp fellows will focus on hosting volunteer days at St Michael’s Community Garden and supporting Garden Club.  For Garden Club, the Fellow will recruit participants for Garden Club, host weekly garden club meetings, and help build leadership from the community in garden club. The other College Corps fellow will focus on recruiting volunteers and planning out volunteer days.  They will also help out during volunteer days.  In particular, this person will help to recruit local businesses to do volunteer days as team building events for their employees, will build volunteering programs with local K-12 schools in partnership with Edible Campus Program, and will identify more ways to recruit volunteers from the community at large. We would prefer someone who speaks Spanish for the first fellow, but the second fellow does not need to speak Spanish.

The garden is made up of 48 garden beds where community members come together to plant, tend, and harvest organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The garden is located in Isla Vista where 69% of the population is below the poverty line. As such, the gardens provide an essential source of food for the community.  Though this garden is physically located at a church, the garden is available to the public and fully separate from the religious activities of the church.  The fellow will not be proselytizing or participating in religious activity. This garden and the associated church is open, inclusive and affirming to the LGBT community.

Food Security

Veggie Rescue's Mission is to fight food insecurity by rescuing surplus produce and delivering it, free of charge, to nonprofits, schools, and community programs serving people in need. The fellows responsibilities will be split between food recovery logistics and community outreach.

Logistics & Food Recovery: The fellow will assist with the physical collection and distribution of fresh produce. This includes joining staff for donation pickups from local farms and vendors and ensuring deliveries reach our partner sites. This ""boots on the ground"" work allows the fellow to see the immediate impact of food recovery.

Outreach & Engagement: The fellow will serve as a public face for Veggie Rescue. They will represent us at tabling events, such as local Farmers Markets, to educate the public on food waste. They will also lead neighborhood canvassing efforts to identify and register new locations for our ""Backyard Harvest"" program, turning local surplus fruit into community resources.

Education: To promote long-term sustainability, the fellow will assist in delivering presentations at local schools. Their goal will be to inspire students and help facilitate the growth of ""Veggie Rescue Clubs."
